New Mum, Not Everything After Birth Is ‘Normal.’
Some Symptoms Need Urgent Medical Care.

After childbirth, your body goes through a lot of changes.
Bleeding, cramping, breast fullness, tiredness, and body aches can all be part of normal recovery.
But there are also postpartum warning signs that should never be brushed aside as “just part of motherhood.”
Let’s talk about the red flags after birth that need urgent attention.
Common postpartum red flags to watch out for
1. Very heavy bleeding:
Some bleeding after birth is normal, but very heavy bleeding is not.
Please seek urgent care if:
You are soaking a pad in an hour or less
You pass large clots
The bleeding suddenly becomes much heavier again after it had reduced
This could be a sign of postpartum haemorrhage and needs prompt medical attention.
2. Fever or chills:
A fever after birth is not something to ignore.
It may be a sign of:
a womb infection
a urinary tract infection
a wound infection
or a breast infection (mastitis)
If you feel hot, shivery, unwell, or develop a temperature, please get checked.
3. Foul-smelling vaginal discharge:
Lochia should have a fleshy or menstrual-like smell, but it should not smell offensive or rotten.
A strong bad smell may suggest infection, especially if it comes with fever or pelvic pain.
4. Severe lower abdominal or pelvic pain
Mild cramping can be normal after birth, especially while breastfeeding.
But severe pain, worsening pain or pain with fever and heavy bleeding is not normal and should be reviewed urgently.
5. Headache that is severe or won’t go away:
A bad postpartum headache deserves attention especially if it comes with:
blurred vision
swelling
dizziness
chest pain
high blood pressure
shortness of breath
This could point to postpartum pre-eclampsia, which can happen even after delivery.
6. Shortness of breath, chest pain or difficulty breathing:
This is an emergency. It may be a sign of:
a blood clot in the lungs
severe high blood pressure complications
heart problems
or serious infection
Seek urgent medical help immediately.
7. Pain, redness, or swelling in one leg:
If one leg becomes swollen, hot, painful, or tender especially in the calf, don’t ignore it. This may be a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis), which can become dangerous if it travels to the lungs.
8. Burning when passing urine or inability to pass urine:
Painful urination, difficulty passing urine, or feeling unable to empty your bladder properly can point to infection or bladder problems after birth.
9. Breast redness, severe pain or fever while breastfeeding:
Breast fullness can happen, but if one breast becomes:
very painful
red
swollen
hot
and you also feel feverish
…it may be mastitis and should be treated early.
10. Feeling extremely sad, hopeless, confused or having thoughts of harming yourself or your baby:
This one matters deeply. Baby blues can happen in the first few days, but if a mother is:
feeling persistently overwhelmed
unable to sleep at all even when baby sleeps
crying constantly
feeling detached from the baby
hearing or seeing things
having thoughts of self-harm or harming the baby
Seek urgent help immediately.
Maternal mental health is just as important as physical recovery.
A gentle reminder from Midwife Chi
New mum, you are not expected to “tough it out” through dangerous symptoms. Please don’t let fear, shame, or the pressure to seem strong stop you from speaking up.
If something feels seriously wrong after birth, it is always better to be checked and reassured than to stay home and hope it passes.
Midwife Chi’s note to every postpartum mum
Your body has done something extraordinary. You deserve recovery that is safe, supported, and taken seriously.
If you ever feel like, “I’m not sure if this is normal,” please reach out to a healthcare provider especially if you have heavy bleeding, fever, severe pain, breathing difficulty, severe headache, or anything that makes you feel suddenly unwell. Postpartum care is not only about the baby. It’s about you too.
Mums, do you think enough women are told about postpartum danger signs before going home with their baby? Let’s talk.
