Born in the rural landscapes of South Carolina, Althea Gibson's passion for tennis ignited during her teenage years. In a time when the tennis world was regrettably segregated, her talents shone brilliantly, capturing the national Black women's championship not once, but twice. Alice Marble, a four-time U.S. Nationals winner, championed Gibson's cause, leading to her debut at the prestigious U.S. Open in 1950.
The turning point in Gibson's career arrived in 1956, as she clinched the singles title at the French Open, becoming the first African American to achieve this remarkable feat. She didn't stop there, securing the doubles title as well. 1957 saw her triumphant at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, earning her the title of Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press, both in 1957 and 1958.
Throughout the 1950s, Gibson's dominance continued with an impressive tally of 56 singles and doubles titles, which included 11 major championships. Her legacy extended beyond tennis, as she toured with the Harlem Globetrotters in 1960, showcasing her tennis prowess in exhibition matches before their basketball games.
In 1964, Gibson broke new ground once more by becoming the first Black woman to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, a testament to her versatility as an athlete. Her professional golf career spanned until 1971, the same year she was honoured with induction into the National Lawn Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
Beyond her athletic achievements, Althea Gibson served as New Jersey's commissioner of athletics from 1975 to 1985, demonstrating her commitment to promoting sports and inclusivity.
