Writing a Business Plan. Was it a good idea?

My very first business plan was done when I got to the end of my very first year as a financial advisor at Royal Life.

In 1986 I had just picked up my Christmas pay cheque of £300.00 and was at a particular low ebb. I was looking forward to Christmas with not enough money to pay the bills.

How did you start?

I sat with my wife and asked what do I need to earn next year so this NEVER happens again?

We discussed bills, outgoings, holidays and what we thought “would be sufficient? Was it a good idea?” HELL YES!

I then had an inbuilt clock to achieve my ‘then’ monthly goal of £1500.00

What did you learn?

I’ve since learnt those who don’t have a business plan cannot measure how they are on track to achieve.

My business plans now are completed in October for the ensuing year and the rest is history.

Do you think it’s a good idea?

People don’t plan to fail. They just fail to plan.
