What affect has the natural hair debate had on Black men

The natural hair debate has had a major affect on Black men who face similar pressures as Black women to conform to Eurocentric standards and stereotypes of what defines conventional beauty.

Many of the experiences of bias and discrimination faced by Black men are similar to those of Black women, but it does not negate their own unique challenges based on the legacy of slavery and insidious global social norms where Black men were deemed unattractive by traditional Western “good hair” standards.

Where to begin?

It may appear that Black men have been less vocal about their natural hair journey, but don’t be fooled. The natural hair movement continues to challenge outdated norms and standards of beauty.

There is a growing acceptance of natural hair, and Black men are becoming more comfortable with their image. They are more motivated to challenge the misconceptions that do not serve them in order to express their individual style and identity across all sectors of society.

Their journey has been as complex as the Black women's.

Black men have historically been expected to conform to societal norms that continues to prioritise and adhere to Eurocentric beauty standards. Believe it or not this has led many Black men to use chemical relaxers, perms or other treatments to alter their hair texture, or to keep their hair short and closely cropped to avoid discrimination or negative stereotypes.

Thankfully, the hair debate has helped to challenge traditional beauty norms for men. The debate has encouraged more men to experiment with their hairstyles and be less concerned about conforming to the 'traditional' and rigid notions of beauty. It has opened up conversations about how Black men can express themselves more authentically through their hair, and how different hairstyles can be seen as attractive and fashionable.

There is no denying that the rise of Black male celebrities such as Michael B. Jordan, Kendrick Lamar and Anthony Anderson who have all embraced their natural hair textures and this continues to inspire. They positively use their platforms and influence to not only celebrate but promote greater acceptance for diverse hair textures and styles.

When it comes to profits the beauty industry are paying close attention.

The beauty industry are making efforts to promote natural hair care and styling techniques aimed at Black men. They are producing a wide range of natural hair care brands and products that cater specifically to their needs. This is in response to the growing world-wide demand for providing wider natural hair care options for Black men.

Finally, with greater representation of men with natural hair in media and advertising the natural hair debate will continue to challenge outdated, traditional beauty norms and increase diversity for men.
