Navigating Loneliness in Leadership: Supporting Women of Colour in the Workplace

In the dynamic landscape of the workplaces, women, particularly women of colour, often find themselves navigating unique challenges as they ascend to senior roles. Many become "Onlys" – the sole person of their race or gender in the room. This isolation can amplify the impact of microaggressions, bias, and discrimination, such as having their expertise questioned or facing remarks about their emotions.

Research from Lean In underscores these struggles, revealing that "Onlys" are disproportionately affected by such isolating experiences. In fact, 56% of senior-level women in the report expressed feeling lonely at work. This loneliness not only erodes confidence but also contributes to acute feelings of stress and isolation among women in leadership positions.

And not only that.

According to a recent survey the dual pressures of professional expectations and personal responsibilities frequently lead to burnout and overwhelm for two-thirds of these women. The toll of inadequate support systems is clear, highlighting the urgent need for workplaces to foster inclusive environments that empower and uplift women and women of colour in leadership positions.

Finally, recognising and addressing these challenges is pivotal. By championing diversity and inclusive workplace environments which provide strong support networks, and cultivating inclusive leadership practices, companies can ensure that every woman feels valued, supported, and able to thrive in their professional journey. Together, we can build workplaces where all women – especially those at the intersection of gender and race – can excel and lead with confidence.
