Why Global Leadership Must Champion Equity and Inclusion—A Call to Action

"True leadership is not about power or control—it's about creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances."

The challenges of today’s world demand leadership that transcends borders, ideologies  and short-term political gains. From Nigeria’s persistent struggles with governance and economic inequality to China’s dictatorial control that stifles dissent, to the resurgence of exclusionary politics in Western democracies like the U.S. and U.K., one truth stands clear: Leadership that marginalises, excludes or suppresses voices is leadership that ultimately fails.

And yet, the cracks are showing everywhere.

In France, President Macron faces mounting resistance to policies that many argue deepen social divides, from pension reforms to handling immigration. In Ireland, political uncertainty grows as economic pressures test the stability of its coalition government.

Meanwhile, Scotland grapples with the collapse of its independence movement amid internal strife, leaving its people disillusioned. It’s clear: The Western world, once heralded as a beacon of democracy and equity, is now navigating unprecedented turbulence.

This is a global pattern—not isolated chaos. The rise of populist movements, such as President-elect Trump’s agenda in the U.S. or the UK Reform Party's push for exclusionary policies, reflects a broader retreat from inclusivity and belonging. Instead of embracing diversity and equity as a solution to division, leaders exploit fears and frustrations, fuelling division to solidify their power.

Why DE&I Often Falls Short

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) initiatives should be the antidote to these challenges, but why do they so often fall short?

In practice, DE&I too frequently becomes a tick-box exercise, stripped of accountability and meaningful outcomes. Corporations showcase diverse boards but fail to address wage disparities or access to leadership opportunities. Governments implement symbolic gestures while dismantling the very frameworks that support equity.

Public trust wanes when DE&I feels like a marketing ploy rather than a genuine effort for systemic change.

Nowhere is this more evident than in Western democracies. In the U.K., exclusionary rhetoric thrives while critical equity initiatives falter under funding cuts. In the U.S., divisive agendas overshadow progress, and in France, social upheavals reveal deep fractures in how equity is approached. Meanwhile, the struggles in Ireland and Scotland reflect how political instability undermines efforts to create fair and inclusive systems.

It’s a Mess—So What’s Next?

The current landscape is chaotic, but chaos often precedes transformation. The question is whether leaders—and society at large—will rise to the occasion or retreat into division.

We can’t rely on empty promises or half-hearted efforts from our leaders. Equity and inclusion must become non-negotiable principles at every level of leadership. This isn’t just about moral imperatives—it’s about survival. Marginalisation breeds instability and exclusion erodes trust in institutions, creating a cycle of dysfunction that no country can afford.

What We Can Do

As individuals and organisations, we must demand better—and take action:

  • Hold Leaders Accountable: Call out performative DE&I efforts. Push for policies that prioritize equity in tangible ways—funding education, ensuring wage equality, and expanding representation in decision-making.

  • Amplify Marginalised Voices: If companies are serious about DE&I, they must create platforms that elevate diverse perspectives, ensuring that solutions reflect the needs of everyone, not just the privileged few.

  • Collaborate Across Borders: Learn from global challenges and successes. Whether it’s the struggles in Scotland or systemic reform in Nigeria, these lessons can guide action.

  • Champion True Inclusion: Move beyond tokenism. DE&I isn’t just about who’s at the table; it’s about ensuring everyone has a voice and equal stake in shaping outcomes.

Building a Future Rooted in Equity and Inclusion

This isn’t about parties, ideologies or national boundaries—it’s about the shared values of fairness, inclusion and progress. The cracks in leadership, the inequities that divide us, and the policies that alienate communities cannot be ignored. They demand attention not to sow despair, but to ignite action and accountability.

The failures of global leadership we witness today—from broken promises to deepening divides—serve as stark reminders of what happens when equity and inclusion are treated as afterthoughts. These failures are not inevitable; they are choices. And just as they are chosen, so too can we choose to create systems that truly reflect the needs and hopes of all people.

The mess we see today—inequality, exclusion and the erosion of trust—does not have to define tomorrow. Leadership that listens, prioritises equity and builds bridges instead of walls can transform this narrative. It’s time to spotlight what works, amplify the voices of those often ignored and hold accountable those who seek to divide.

We all know that leadership without equity and inclusion will always fail. It is a temporary patch on a wound that needs healing. Together, we can rewrite the narrative—not as a fleeting movement, but as a global standard for progress.
