Know the Signs

Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Ovarian cancer is sometimes called the “silent killer,” not because it has no symptoms, but because the early warning signs are easy to miss or dismiss. Globally, ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women and one of the most lethal gynaecological cancers.

According to the World Health Organisation, over 300,000 women are diagnosed each year and survival rates are far higher when the disease is caught in its earliest stages, yet fewer than 20% are diagnosed early.

Why?

The symptoms often mimic everyday issues like digestive discomfort or urinary changes, so many women and even healthcare providers may overlook them until the cancer has advanced.

Recognising these subtle signals and acting promptly can literally save lives.

Common symptoms to watch for include:

  • Persistent tummy or abdominal pain

  • Frequent bloating

  • Feeling full quickly or loss of appetite

  • Needing to pee more often or more urgently

Other warning signs may include indigestion, back pain, changes in bowel habits, post-menopausal vaginal bleeding or extreme tiredness.

If any of these symptoms are new, frequent (more than 12 times a month), or persistent, it’s important to speak with your GP or healthcare provider.

Early detection makes a difference.

Your awareness could save a life. Share this with someone you care about.
