The Most Gripping and Debilitating Symptom of Perimenopause—-Nobody Talks About…
FEAR.
I’m a Christian. I know the Bible says “Fear not” 365 times — one for every day of the year. And yet, during Perimenopause, I was gripped by a fear so intense, so irrational, so foreign to me, it nearly broke me.
I’ve never been a fearful person. But this? This was something else.
I became afraid of everything.
Afraid of myself.
Afraid of others.
Afraid of how I looked, how I sounded.
Afraid I’d made a mistake on something simple, so I’d check and check again.
I’d check if the front door was locked — not once, but five, six, seven times.
I feared I appeared “crazy,” so I avoided leaving the house.
There was a constant sense of doom in my mind — like something bad was going to happen at any moment.
I feared death.
I feared being attacked.
I feared falling and hitting my head in my own home.
I feared social interaction — that people would see something was wrong with me, that I was no longer myself.
And I was cleaning, constantly, obsessively — like I could somehow clean away the dread.
The anxiety was through the roof.
The mental torment was real.
And none of this was “just in my head” — it was a symptom of perimenopause.
But nobody talks about it.
Not enough women know.
Not enough doctors are listening.
Not enough churches are prepared to support women through it.
In fact in some Black communities and cultures, women who are going through this, are often accused of being “witches.”
That’s why I speak out. That’s why I advocate.
To tell the truth.
To break the silence.
To make sure no woman goes through this alone — especially Black women.
If you’ve felt this kind of fear, I want you to know:
You are not going crazy.
You are not weak.
You are not alone.
You are experiencing hormonal changes that are real, valid and deserve attention and culturally-competent healthcare.
Can you relate? How has fear shown up with you? Let’s talk 🗣️ in the comments? ⬇️
