The Leadership Menopause Blind Spot
There is a question we are not asking often enough.
“What if we've spent decades treating menopause as a women's health issue when it is also one of the greatest leadership and career challenges hiding in plain sight?”
For many women, perimenopause and menopause arrive at exactly the point when they have the greatest influence. They are leading teams, running businesses, mentoring others, serving on boards, caring for ageing parents and supporting the next generation. Their judgement, experience and strategic thinking have never been more valuable.
Yet too often, the systems around them have failed to keep pace.
For more than twenty-five years, the NBWN has supported women building careers, growing businesses and navigating significant life transitions. One pattern continues to emerge. Just as women reach the stage where they should be shaping organisations and opening doors for others, many begin navigating symptoms that affect sleep, confidence, concentration and wellbeing, often without the understanding or support they deserve.
Research increasingly shows that women from African, Caribbean, South Asian and other ethnically diverse communities can experience menopause differently, with symptoms that may begin earlier, last longer or have a greater impact on everyday life. At the same time, many women continue to face cultural stigma, workplace misunderstanding and inconsistent access to culturally competent healthcare.
This is no longer simply a health conversation.
It is about retaining experienced leaders, supporting women entrepreneurs, protecting career progression and ensuring organisations do not lose decades of talent, knowledge and innovation because they overlooked a predictable stage of life. Employers are increasingly recognising menopause as a workforce and leadership issue because unsupported symptoms affect productivity, retention and organisational performance.
Every woman who steps back before she is ready represents more than a personal loss. She represents lost leadership, lost innovation, lost mentoring and lost opportunity for those who follow.
Perhaps the real measure of an inclusive workplace is not how well it recruits women, but how well it supports them at the height of their experience.
