What If Menopause Is Quietly Reshaping Your Leadership Without You Realising?

There is a shift happening across the workforce and most organisations have not caught up with it.

Women in mid-career, often at the peak of their leadership, experience and influence, are recalibrating how they work, how they lead and in many cases, whether they stay at all.

This is not a pipeline issue. It is not a confidence gap. It is a convergence of biology, bias and business structures that were never designed to hold all three at once.

Menopause is showing up in boardrooms, in business decisions, in risk tolerance, in energy levels and in how leaders navigate pressure. Yet it remains largely absent from how organisations think about performance, leadership development and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy.

For Black and women of colour, the challenge is compounded. Evidence from the UCL EGA Institute for Women's Health highlights that many feel dismissed within healthcare systems, often navigating symptoms without adequate support or culturally informed guidance.

Now place that alongside workplace dynamics where visibility is high, margin for error is low and the expectation to “hold it together” is constant.

For founders and business owners, the equation shifts again.

There is no policy to lean on. No structured support. Just the reality of making decisions, managing teams, sustaining revenue and protecting your wellbeing while your body is undergoing significant change.

Leadership becomes more than strategy. It becomes self-awareness, energy management and the ability to redesign how you operate without losing momentum.

This is where menopause moves from being a personal experience to a business-critical conversation.

If DEI is serious about equity, it must account for the biological realities that shape how women lead. And if leadership is serious about sustainability, it must include the discipline of self-reflection, wellbeing and adaptive performance.

The question is no longer whether menopause impacts the workplace.

It is whether leaders and organisations are prepared to respond to it with the level of intelligence, strategy and honesty it requires.
