Why Am I At The Club… and Why Does It Suddenly Feel Like A Sauna With A Soundtrack?

The music is loud. The lights are flashing. Someone has just brushed past me for the third time. Not only that, out of nowhere, my internal thermostat has declared an emergency.

Hot flush. Activated.

Ten years ago, this was carefree fun. Now the bass feels amplified. The crowd feels closer. The air feels thicker. It is not just the club, it is my nervous system responding differently.

Welcome to what I call “Menopause Edition.”

Menopause Edition is that phase of life, perimenopause and menopause, when hormonal shifts, particularly fluctuating oestrogen levels, begin to affect temperature regulation, sleep, mood, concentration and stress tolerance. It is biological. It is neurological and it is very real and it's uncomfortable.

I now realise the club is not objectively hotter, my body is simply recalibrating.

Now I know, hormonal changes can heighten heat sensitivity, increase cortisol responses and reduce tolerance for overstimulation. What once felt vibrant now suddenly feels overwhelming. The volume feels louder. The room feels warmer. Patience feels thinner.

Yet against my better judgement, I am still here.

Dressed up. Present. Outside. Living.

I know midlife is not a retreat from joy. It is a renegotiation of how we experience it. Maybe I dance for two songs instead of ten. Maybe I stand near the fan. Maybe I leave earlier. That is not decline. I finally admit, it is self-awareness.

That expression? It is not irritation. It is boundary clarity.

Be honest, have you ever had a hot flush at the worst possible moment? At a wedding, in a meeting, on the school run… or on the dance floor?

Share your “Menopause Edition” moment in the comments. Like and share this with the friend who now carries a hand fan in her handbag and calls it preparation, not drama.
