Menopause Is Changing, But Are the Systems Around Us Keeping Up?

We are witnessing a powerful shift.
Menopause is no longer being swept under the rug. Women are demanding better care, real understanding and compassionate support and they’re right to do so.
From personalised hormone therapy to digital health tools, emerging trends in menopause care are offering new hope.
Personalised HRT and Non-Hormonal Options
Advances in science mean treatments like Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) are becoming more tailored to each woman’s needs, reducing risk and improving results.
Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs) are gaining ground as non-hormonal alternatives.
Mental Health Support
We now understand that menopause is not just physical, it can deeply impact emotional wellbeing. From depression to anxiety and brain fog, mental health tools like therapy, mindfulness and even symptom-tracking apps are giving women the support they deserve.
Holistic & Integrative Care
Yoga, acupuncture, herbal supplements like root or black cohosh and functional medicine approaches are being embraced by women seeking whole-person healing.
Workplace Inclusion
Nearly 1 in 4 women consider leaving their jobs due to menopause symptoms (CIPD, 2019), while 45% say symptoms make work more difficult (British Menopause Society).
Forward-thinking companies are beginning to respond with menopause policies, flexible work options and dedicated champions driving equity.
Tech & Telehealth
Wearable devices and symptom-tracking apps are giving women more control and insight into their health. Telemedicine is making it easier to access specialists, even in underserved communities.
But here’s the truth that cannot be ignored:
Black women continue to be left behind
Menopause is not experienced equally and Black women often face an entirely different reality, shaped by systemic racism, medical bias, cultural silence and generational trauma.
Consider this
Less than 50% of UK medical schools offer menopause-specific education (BMS/RCOG).
Black women are more likely to have severe, frequent and prolonged symptoms and are underrepresented in clinical research.
Chronic stress from racism and inequity increases the risk of Alzheimer’s, anxiety and hypertension, conditions often made worse by menopause.
So, what’s going wrong?
Black women are often dismissed or misdiagnosed, a legacy of medical gaslighting and implicit bias.
Cultural expectations to “be strong” discourage many from seeking help.
Mental health needs are under-recognised, yet vital, especially during perimenopause.
What Needs to Happen Next?
Train healthcare professionals in culturally competent, menopause-informed care.
Build inclusive workplace cultures where all women feel safe to speak.
Invest in mental health support tailored for Black women navigating menopause and life stressors.
Engage communities, not just with pamphlets, but with real conversations.
Champion research that focuses on the needs and voices of Black women.
Let’s Talk…
This group exists to share knowledge, ask questions and support each other. We’re done with silence. We’re done with stigma.
So what do you need most right now to feel supported during menopause? Is it better information? A supportive GP? A safe space at work? Someone who just gets it?
