The $1 Trillion Women’s Health Gap,  But Where Do Black Women Fit In?

There is a figure being widely shared in global health conversations. The World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates that closing the women’s health gap could unlock up to $1 trillion in economic value.

Why Women Need to Pay Attention to Femtech, Now!

Femtech is how new tech can help us live longer, healthier and with less burnout, especially for Black women and girls.

Femtech, short for female technology, covers digital tools, diagnostics, wearables, telehealth and medical devices built specifically for women’s health. From periods and fertility to menopause, HIV/STIs, pelvic health and beyond. The term was coined in 2016 to give a fast‑growing but long‑neglected field a clear identity and to attract serious investment and research attention.

Why should the HealthTalk Group care?

Femtech is not just more apps, it is a practical way to close care gaps, counter burnout and improve outcomes for women who are too often dismissed or underserved by the system, especially Black and women of colour. The UK and US data are unambiguous.

This feature honours the Black nurses, midwives and mental health professionals who continue to hold the line. They provide culturally sensitive, trauma-informed care while advocating fiercely for mothers who deserve to be safe, believed and properly supported.

The report offers a deep insight into the lived experiences of over 1,100 Black and mixed-race women in the UK, highlighting systemic failures in care, communication and inclusion.

Despite years of advocacy, inquiries and policy pledges, Black women remain up to four times more likely to die in childbirth compared to their white counterparts.
