10 Quick Facts About Premenstrual Stress (PMS)

Here are a few facts you may not know about Premenstrual Stress (PMS).

  1. There are more than 150 symptoms that are associated with PMS, from muscle cramping and breast tenderness to nausea, anger and irritability.

  2. At least 60% (and some say as much as 85%) of all menstruating women suffer from any number of these symptoms each month during their cycle.

  3. 5% of women who suffer from PMS have symptoms that are so severe they are considered debilitating

  4. Skipping meals, excessive weight loss and weight gain, birth control pills and high-stress levels can all make you more susceptible to experiencing PMS.

  5. Diet, exercise, herbal medicine, aromatherapy and acupressure have all been shown to reduce the severity of PMS symptoms and even reverse them in a short period of time.

  6. Alcohol, sugar, tobacco and caffeine have all been shown to contribute to PMS and avoiding them has been shown to reduce symptoms

  7. It can take as little as 1 week to make changes in your diet and introduce other holistic treatments that can help relieve PMS symptoms significantly.

  8. A study for the Women's Nutritional Advisory Service (WNAS) found that more than eight out of 10 PMS sufferers feel violent and aggressive for up to two weeks before their periods and their condition has affected their relationship with their partners.

  9. Between 2% - 4% of women are forced to take up to two days off work every month because of the severity of their symptoms.

  10. Some popular PMS medications can have side effects including nausea, appetite changes, nervousness, dizziness, tremors, dry mouth, skin rashes and even suicidal thoughts and behaviour.
