Honouring the Dedication of Black Nurses
The NBWN and the UK Weekly Gleaner Newspaper were proud to celebrate International Nurses Day (May 12), however it is essential to recognise the unwavering commitment of Black nurses within the National Health Service (NHS) and other health organisations across the world.
Among these remarkable individuals, Black nurses have played a pivotal role, serving tirelessly to ensure the well-being of patients and communities.

Let’s face it, becoming a nurse is a profession of choice and the NHS is the largest employers of Black women in the UK.
Why Celebrate Black Nurses on International Nurses Day?
Mary Jane Seacole, a Jamaican-born nurse, stands out as a beacon of inspiration. Her courage, resilience and compassion during the Crimean War exemplify the spirit of nursing.
Despite facing adversity and discrimination, Mary Jane selflessly tended to wounded soldiers, providing care and comfort when it was needed most. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of nurses worldwide.
And let’s not forget Nigerian born Kofoworola Abeni Pratt, the first Black nurse to work in the NHS and later named Vice-President of the International Council of Nurses.
In 1973, she received the prestigious Florence Nightingale Medal, the highest international merit for a nurse. Her legacy continues to inspire nurses worldwide.
And yes, there are more women to celebrate.
Daphne Steele, born in Guyana, is remembered as the first Black matron to join the NHS.
Despite facing challenges, Daphne broke expectations and barriers, encouraging other young nurses from diverse backgrounds to contribute to the health service.
Her unwavering determination and resilience marked her as a silent revolutionary, leaving an indelible imprint on nursing in the UK.
Come on now, these trailblazing nurses paved the way for others and continue to inspire generations of healthcare professionals.
Their stories remind us of the importance of breaking down barriers and promoting diversity in healthcare.
Honouring the Sacrifices
Yet, alongside celebrated figures like these aforementioned nurses, there are countless unspoken heroes, nurses whose names may not adorn history books but whose impact remains immeasurable.
These dedicated professionals work behind the scenes, often sacrificing their own well-being to uplift others.
Their compassion, expertise, and tireless efforts deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.
"Amidst the celebration of International Nurses Day, it is always nice to remember those most forgotten. My Mum worked in the NHS and so did many from the Caribbean only later in history to be forgotten and discarded. So I pay tribute to all nurses but a special tribute to the Black nurses within the NHS whose tireless efforts and boundless compassion exemplify the very heart of healthcare. And to all who are waiting for compensation due to the Windrush scandal I hope this government has more than just words on this special day." - Dawn Butler MP, Brent Central
